Organisational structures and workplace conditions have a large impact on the design of large-scale software design projects. The complex development process of the CAT Network - a network for communication, art and technology - documented in this paper therefore does not only consider the product itself and the development phases it went through, but also the social and organisational context. The paper suggests that there are three elements - Environment, Group and Stage (egs) - which are key aspects in a complete documentation of complex development processes. The final product is considered to be a result of the intersections of these three elements. Following a review of underlying theories for all egs aspects, each element is considered within the context of the development process of the CAT Network.Abstract S.iii Keywords S.iii Acknowledgements S.iv Introduction: The CAT Network S.1 1 The Interdisciplinary CAT Development Environment S.3 - 1.1 The CAT Development Environment S.3 - 1.1.1 GMD - National Research Centre for Information Technology S.4 - 1.1.2 IMK - Institute for Media Communication S.4 - 1.1.3 Exploratory Media Lab S.5 - 1.1.4 MARS - Media Arts Research Studies S.6 - 1.1.5 CAT - Communication, Art & Technology S.6 - 1.2 Categories of Disciplinarity S.7 - 1.2.1 A Definition of Disciplinarity S.7 - 1.2.2 Dimensions of Disciplinarity S.7 - 1.2.3 A Definition of Interdisciplinarity S.9 - 1.2.4 Dimensions of Interdisciplinarity S.9 - 1.3 Degree of Interdisciplinarity of the CAT Environment S.10 2 The Interdisciplinary CAT Project Group S.11 - 2.1 Group Characteristics S.11 - 2.1.1 Dimensions of Group Categorisations S.11 - 2.2 Interdisciplinary Project Groups S.12 - 2.2.1 Requirements for the Success of Interdisciplinarity S.12 - 2.2.2 Benefits of Interdisciplinarity S.13 - 2.2.3 Risks of Interdisciplinarity S.13 - 2.3 The CAT project group S.14 - 2.3.1 Benefits of Interdisciplinarity for the CAT Project Group S.14 - 2.3.2 CAT Group Characteristics based on Baron et al S.14enOrganisationsstrukturArbeitsplatzumfeldDisziplinaritätInterdisziplinaritätGruppeGruppen Charakteristikiteratives Prototypen DesignBewertungRichtlinieorganisational structureworkplace conditionorganisational environmentdisciplinarityinterdisciplinaritygroupgroup characteristicdevelopmentiterative prototype designcognitive walkthroughinformal evaluationguideline005006629A network for communication, art and technology and the three key elements environment, group and stagediploma thesis
