Apart from the monitoring of the welding parameters, the sensors normally used up to now have only allowed the position of the torch to be controlled, but not the three-dimensional shape of the weld bead and the fusion zone. In the last analysis, therefore, the control of the welding process is not closed loop, but open loop control. Precise adherence to the parameters for weld preparation, torch position, etc. is therefore necessary as before.
