Treeck, C. vanC. vanTreeck2022-03-042022-03-042011https://publica.fraunhofer.de/handle/publica/22452410.4324/9780203891612The chapter provides background information on human thermoregulation, thermal sensation and comfort perception. The various influence factors and performance indicators which are of relevance for assessing the occupants' level of thermal comfort are addressed. The associated prediction methods in simulation are emphasized on the basis of a description of the conditions for thermal comfort in uniform and non-uniform environments which distinguishes between the various levels of detail of available simulation models and their accuracy, depending on the conceptual stages of a building during the planning process. The chapter explains the concept of thermal comfort indices and summarizes international codes and standards for thermal quality performance prediction. The chapter also gives application examples addressing the local comfort simulation with a detailed thermal manikin, the draught risk analysis using a coupled CFD approach, as well as typical results which are obtained using a thermal multi-zone model. The intention of this chapter is to give a concise overview of the topic of indoor thermal quality performance prediction with special emphasis on, but not restricted to building energy simulation. This includes an introduction on the dynamic reactions of the human body to thermal stimuli, as well as the aspects of thermal sensation and comfort perception. The case studies presented here are designed to make the reader aware of the different levels of detail in simulation and the physical resolution of the various methods, enbale him/her to select an appropriate assessment method in simulation practice and introduce him to the codes and standards available.en690Indoor thermal quality performance predictionbook article
