Although the basic concepts of Software-Oriented Architectures, Web Services, and Grid technologies have become very popular in the last few years and are recognized as enabler architectural styles for modern enterprise and scientific applications, much confusion remains concerning strategies and processes suitable for engineering Gridenabled Web Services. This document surveys the state of the art and practice in the field of processes aimed at engineering semantic-oriented Grid-enabled solutions. Processes for the engineering of Grid infrastructures are out of the scope of this document. The results of the survey let us conclude that some standard practices are currently available for Web Services engineering, although, in many cases, their integration turns out to be problematic; concerning the engineering of semanticoriented service-based solutions, it is, at the moment, very difficult to determine standard engineering practices mainly due to missing standardization of those infrastructures, which would potentially be capable of supporting this kind of solutions. Major contributions of this document to the goals of the ASG project include a systematic analysis of the fields related to the project, a structured overview of the technologies available in the fields as well as their mutual relationships, and a deep analysis of the processes currently available for engineering many of the solutions to be provided by the project. This document can provide valuable input to work packages C0, Project Management, due to the analysis of suitable engineering processes; C1, ASG Interface, due to the overview on available technologies; and C7, Usability and Demonstration, due to the analysis of suitable engineering processes. Furthermore, the document provides a basis for the further work of C6, ASG Development Methodology.1 Introduction S.1-2 2 Semantic Grid Domain and Related Engineering Processes S.3-21 - 2.1 Background S.3-4 - 2.2 Grid Computing S.4-10 - 2.2.1 Web Services S.5-6 - 2.2.2 Semantic Web S.7 - 2.2.3 Grid Services S.7-8 - 2.2.4 Semantic Web Services S.8-9 - 2.2.5 Semantic Grid S.9-10 - 2.3 Search Scope S.10 - 2.4 Engineering Processes S.10-21 - 2.4.1 Service-oriented Analysis and Design S.11-17 - 2.4.2 User Grid Services Development Processes S.17-19 - 2.4.3 Semantic-oriented Handling of Services S.19-21 3 Discussion S.22-24 4 Related Work S.25 5 Summary and Outlook S.26 References S.27 Acronyms S.33enservice engineering processservice engineering life cycleASG004005006Adaptable process engineering surveyreport
