The series connection of individual cells that share the current collector eliminates the need for external connections and complex housings. This concept allows a significant increase in energy and power density at the system level. The bipolar design has been studied for a wide range of battery chemistries. With the introduction of solid electrolyte batteries, it now has a high potential for implementation. The practical realization poses challenges for the individual battery chemistries, which are examined in detail.enfalseBipolar batteriesBipolar electrodeBipolar lead acid batteryBipolar lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteriesBipolar nickel-metal hydride batteryBipolar solid-state batteryDesign principlesCell and Battery Design – Batteries | Bipolar Plates and Batteriesbook article
