The hierarchic biological structures result from a long-term genetic optimization process. Due to the composite morphology the natural fibres offer a high effective interaction between individual structural features providing high mechanical strength and flexibility at low density. Additionally the high carbon content presents a challenge for the generation of the carbon based materials.en620666Carbon and ceramic materials based on natural flax fibresconference paper
