Understanding "driving readiness": exploiting self-driving functions of autonomous vehicles to increase assembly performance
Abstract
Autonomous vehicles (AVs) extend the driving readiness of conventional cars by adding driving intelligence to the basic (mechanical) driving function. This can open up the potential for car manufacturers to transform manufacturing structures by using the driving readiness of AVs already during the assembly process. AVs would act as their own conveyor from a certain point of driving readiness respective assembly state, which must be determined. For this purpose, we show in this paper the relevance of the term “driving readiness” for its use in assembly systems, divide the term into sub-functions and introduce gradations, since different requirements for the individual functions may apply to its use in assembly than on the road. This leads to a morphological box serving as a tool for assembly planning to derive “production driving readiness”, which has effects on necessary changes to the assembly order and environment. Therefore, we take into account current functions of automated guided vehicles and conduct expert interviews to supply a comprehensive overview.
