Microstructure of NC-propellants investigated by X-ray diffraction (Part 1)

Abstract
Various gun propellant samples were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction. The measurements revealed details on the microstructure such as the degree of crystallinity of the polymer and the mean size of crystalline polymer domains. Both may play an important role for the mechanical properties of the gun propellants. Besides, crystalline nitroguanidine, graphite and aluminum were found and quantified. Further investigations and evaluations are in progress, including further samples and structural approaches on a molecular level.
