PPC in a turbulent environment - fundamentals and approaches

Turbulent markets have led to new manufacturing concepts and planning approaches. This paper provides a closer look on what turbulence means in production and PPC. Starting with a definition of turbulence based on physics this paper presents a new PPC model which distinguishes between planning and control activities and examines production dynamics. The actual level of the work in process is used to introduce three different design strategies for PPC in a turbulent environment. Finally, this paper shows how PPC must therefore be extended by a learning task.
