Within the framework of a study on the chemical behavior of extract-rich barks during particle board manufacture, the chemical interaction between spruce bark and formaldehyde was investigated. For this purpose the innerbark of spruce was fumigated with formaldehyde at 103degreeC for different time periods. Thereafter, increase in weight, the extract content, stiasny number of hot water extractives were determined. The results show, that fumigation of bark with formaldehyde leads to a slight increase in weight, a drastic decrease in the amount of hot water extractives as well as a remarkable decline in their stiasny number. However, the content of formaldehydeinactive extractives remains more or less unchanged. The results lead to conclusion that spruce bark possibly reacts with formaldehyde during the manufacture of particle boards and thus acting as a formaldehyde scavenger.
