LOKI-PED D2.4 - Consolidated information on tolerances in the cabin and the cockpit, and on the mitigation of the effects of smoke events

Title Supplement
LOKI-PED [EASA.2022.C09] Report on hazards related to the carriage of PEDS and lithium batteries in the cabin
Abstract
One target of the LOKI-PED-project is to determine the severity of a PED-battery thermal runaway for passengers and crew. To achieve quantitative data, a five step approach is taken:
1. Provoking of a thermal runaway of PEDs and measurement of combus-tion gases in a burn chamber (Fraunhofer EMI).
2. Provoking of thermal runaway of PEDs in a ventilated small scale cabin demonstrator and assessment of exhaust air gas composition and smoke visibility (Fraunhofer EMI).
3. Measurement of temporal and spatial distribution of a tracer gas (CO2) in a full-scale cabin section using a PED-emulator and emission of smoke (Fraunhofer IBP).
4. Validation of a simulation model based on the full-scale cabin measure-ment of CO2-distribution (Fraunhofer IBP).
5. Simulation parameter study with validated model (Fraunhofer IBP).
The assessment of passenger and crew exposure is performed by linking the CO2-emissions from steps 1 and 2 to the CO2-emission in the simulation and extrapolating the contaminant concentrations based on this scaling. The visuali-zation of the effect of smoke is performed by injecting theatre fog into the full-scale cabin and cockpit section in the Flight Test Facility and filming its decline.
Smoke density is predicted by linking CO2-concentrations and assessed smoke density from step 2. Furthermore, the full scale cabin demonstrator is used to assess the effect of different mitigation measures that can be influenced by cabin crew like:
• Shutoff of cabin air recirculation
• Use of cabin air recirculation
• Use of Personal Air Outlets
