Research on information visualization has so far established an outline of the information visualization process and shed light on a broad range of detail aspects involved. However, there is no model in place that describes the nature of information visualization in a coherent, detailed, and well-defined way. We believe that the lack of such a lingua franca hinders communication on and application of information visualization techniques. Our approach is to design a declarative language for describing and defining information visualization techniques. The information visualization modelling language (IVML) provides a means to formally express, note, preserve, and communicate structure, appearance, behaviour, and functionality of information visualization techniques and applications in a standardized way. The anticipated benefits comprise both application and theory.

Knowledge management: System architectures, main functions, and implementing techniques

Based on existing theoretical models of knowledge management (KM), our investigation on existing KM systems and a prototype system designed for supporting cooperative research in research institutes, we address three important issues in the design and implementation of KM systems, i.e., the software system architecture of a general KM system, the main functions of KM systems and the information processing techniques and algorithms that can be used to implement KM systems.

This paper pro poses a structured query and search model for applying link-based hypertext composites that can be represented with new Web standards in Web searching and describes a primitive prototype system that implements the model. We argue that by enabling users to query different levels of the composite structures with same or different keywords and getting search hits that are not separate nodes but sets of inter-linked nodes, the precision of the search results can be improved. Meanwhile, users may get more contextual information about the search results.

This paper introduces an adaptive method that can be used to construct the query user interfaces for the information integration systems (IIS) on the Web, and a constraint-based method for mapping queries from such IISs into the specific formats of heterogeneous Internet sources. The fuse of this research was ignited by witnessing that WWW information searching becomes harder and harder due to the tremendous development of the Internet and the explosive growth of digital information on the World Wide Web. Incorporating adaptive and constraints-coordinated mechanisms into an information integration system can overcome the diversity of heterogeneous sources and utilize the functionality of the individual sources to the fullest extent.
