PublicationExtending your neighborhood-relationship-based recommendations using your personal web context( 2004)
;Stewart, A. ;Niederée, C. ;Mehta, B. ;Hemmje, M.Neuhold, E.The people, documents, and other entities from a domain persons know, or are in other ways associated with, influence their decision making and the types of recommendations that serve them best. For example, recommending persons to meet in a conference or a paper to read from a digital library collection does not only depend on the task, interests, and skills of a user, but also on the persons and works they are already familiar with. In order for personalization services to reflect this dependency, extended user models that consider users' network of related domain entities in addition to other user characteristics, are required. Based on a unified context model, we present the Personal Web Context approach that models the typed relationships a user is involved in. Based on a Resource Network which can, for example, be built from the information collection and the associated meta data managed by a digital library, domain-specific rules are used to suggest valuable extensions of this "neighborhood" of a user. Such work can form the basis for new types of digital library services.
PublicationKnowledge management: System architectures, main functions, and implementing techniques( 2002)
;Ma, J.Hemmje, M.Based on existing theoretical models of knowledge management (KM), our investigation on existing KM systems and a prototype system designed for supporting cooperative research in research institutes, we address three important issues in the design and implementation of KM systems, i.e., the software system architecture of a general KM system, the main functions of KM systems and the information processing techniques and algorithms that can be used to implement KM systems.
PublicationDesign of a service-based framework for generic 3D information visualization( 2002)
;Xiangchuan, W. ;Jaeschke, G.Hemmje, M.A generic framework based on services for 3D information visualization is presented. The framework can support a wide range of applications and offers the flexibility to be tailored to specific application needs by configuration. The design and implementation details are discussed as well as a concrete application based on this framework.

PublicationFAIRWIS: An integrated system offering trade fair Web-based information services - an R&D case study( 2002)
;Muscogiuri, C. ;Jaeschke, G. ;Paradiso, A.Hemmje, M.Due to the effects of the Internet on the global economy, organizers nowadays work, compete, and cooperate on a worldwide scale. They must be able to cope with the fast pace of worldwide competition by optimizing to market and, especially, by being highly innovative in the products and the services they offer. Because of the dynamic nature of work processes, there is a need for new frameworks and integrated computational environments to model, develop and support business processes in all their steps. We introduce a case study of an integrated system offering trade fair Web-based information services the FAIRWIS system. Our scientific and software development approaches aim at offering on-line advanced Web-based computational environments offering a common platform for the activities of all the user groups involved in the trade fair business. The underlying conceptual model integrates three basic different innovative aspects. Visual appearance: the deployment of an information visualization mechanism allows the generation of 2D and 3D representations to show retrieved data to the user in an appropriate and significant fashion. User centered approach: the employment of user models as a basis for user interface adaptation, in order to tailor information presented and functionality offered at the user interface to serve the user's needs best. Participatory design: the involvement of relevant users in charge of leading the business process definition of the organization they belong to into the development process as co-developers, not merely as consumers.
PublicationKnowledge management support for cooperative research( 2002)
