    Modelling the ICE standard with a formal language for information commerce
    ( 2001)

    Automatizing information commerce requires languages to represent the typical information commerce processes. Existing languages and standards cover either only very specific types of business models or are too general to capture in a concise way the specific properties of information commerce processes. We introduce a language that is specifically designed for information commerce. It can be directly used for the implementation of the processes and communication required in information commerce. We demonstrate the use of the language by applying it to an important standard for specifying information commerce processes, the ICE Information and Content Exchange protocol [ICE1]. By doing so we also illustrate the benefit of using formal specifications for information commerce processes allowing to capture informal specifications, like ICE, in a concise way.

    Adaptive outsourcing in cross-organizational workflows

    Competitive markets force companies to minimize their costs while at the same time offering solutions which are tailored to the needs of their customers. This requires organizations to outsource at least parts of the overall effort and to rely on services which have to be provided by external partners, leading ultimately to virtual enterprises. The workflow concept has been very successful in coordinating and streamlining business processes but is so far limited to a single organization. Any attempt to distribute workflows among different organizations has to face the problems posed by the complex relationship among autonomous organizations and their services. To address these problems we propose a serviceoriented model for cross-organizational workflows. Modeling the workflow execution as a cooperation of services allows different organizations to interact via well-defined interfaces. We further show how the execution can be optimized by selecting services depending on their contribution to quality criteria of the workflow.

    Deriving service models in cross-organizational workflows

    Resource prediction and admission control for interactive video browsing scenarios using application semantics
    (GMD Forschungszentrum Informationstechnik, 1998)

    Interaktive multimediale Anwendungen, wie beispielsweise das Browsen in Videodatanbanken, erzeugen während der Präsentation von Mediendaten stark schwankende Serverlasten. Die Aufgabe von Zulassungskontrollmechanismen ist die Begrenzung der gleichzeitig zu bedienenden Nutzer, um dadurch akzeptable Servicequalitäten zu erreichen. Bereits existierende Verfahren zur Zulassungskontrolle sind jedoch nur für Anwendungen mit relativ konstanten Lasten, wie beispielsweise Video-on-Demand Anwendungen, geeignet. In diesem Artikel wird ein Ansatz zur Zulassungskontrolle vorgestellt, der auf dem stochastischen Modell von sogenannten Zeitkontinuierlichen Markov-Ketten (Continuous Time Markov Chains) basiert. Dadurch wird die Modellierung verschiedener Präsentationszustände, die aufgrund des interaktiven Nutzerverhaltens entstehen, ermöglicht. Zur Modellierung werden semantische Informationen einer aktuellen Session verwendet, indem die Relevanzwerte einzelner Videos hinsichtlich einer vorherigen Anfrage berücksichtigt werden. Somit ist eine präzisere Vorhersage der Ressourcenverbrauchs möglich, wodurch sowohl Dienstgüteparameter (Quality of Service) als auch Serverauslastung verbessert werden können. Der Zulassungskontrollmechanismus ist Bestandteil einer multimedialen Datenbankarchitektur, die Video-Browsing in großen Datenbeständen unterstützt.

    An admission control framework for applications with variable consumption rates in client-pull architectures
    (GMD Forschungszentrum Informationstechnik, 1998)
    Hollfelder, S.
    ;
    Aberer, K.
    Highly interactive multimedia applications require variable data rates during their presentation. Current admission control mechanisms do not address the variable data rate requirements appropriately for the following reasons: (1) classical admission control mechanisms are based on the server-push approach, where the required data rate has to be estimated in advance, and (2) worst-case resource reservation is not economic. Client-pull models are more appropriate to serve these kinds of applications. At the current state, there are no suitable mechanisms that support admission control in client-pull architectures at the server. In this paper, a session-oriented framework for admission control is introduced that is based on two steps: (1) the admission of new clients and (2) the scheduling of the single requests of admitted clients to balance the load. The goal of this approach is to improve the server utilization and the Quality of Service. Evaluation studies demonstrate the benefit of the framework.
