    Research on information visualization has so far established an outline of the information visualization process and shed light on a broad range of detail aspects involved. However, there is no model in place that describes the nature of information visualization in a coherent, detailed, and well-defined way. We believe that the lack of such a lingua franca hinders communication on and application of information visualization techniques. Our approach is to design a declarative language for describing and defining information visualization techniques. The information visualization modelling language (IVML) provides a means to formally express, note, preserve, and communicate structure, appearance, behaviour, and functionality of information visualization techniques and applications in a standardized way. The anticipated benefits comprise both application and theory.

    Towards supporting annotation for existing web pages enabling hyperstructure-based searching

    This paper discusses the requirements and tasks in annotating existing Web pages with additional structural and semantic information. It suggests annotating existing Web pages with the concepts of a domain model, and annotating the links between the Web pages with the relations between these concepts. It also suggests explicitly representing high-level hypermedia structures, so-called hypertext composites and contexts, and annotating the corresponding composite and context pages with such structures. RDF and RDF Schema are adopted to represent the domain models and the resulting annotations. The architecture of a prototype annotation tool is outlined and corresponding requirements for automatic annotation support are discussed.

    The people, documents, and other entities from a domain persons know, or are in other ways associated with, influence their decision making and the types of recommendations that serve them best. For example, recommending persons to meet in a conference or a paper to read from a digital library collection does not only depend on the task, interests, and skills of a user, but also on the persons and works they are already familiar with. In order for personalization services to reflect this dependency, extended user models that consider users' network of related domain entities in addition to other user characteristics, are required. Based on a unified context model, we present the Personal Web Context approach that models the typed relationships a user is involved in. Based on a Resource Network which can, for example, be built from the information collection and the associated meta data managed by a digital library, domain-specific rules are used to suggest valuable extensions of this "neighborhood" of a user. Such work can form the basis for new types of digital library services.

    A generic framework based on services for 3D information visualization is presented. The framework can support a wide range of applications and offers the flexibility to be tailored to specific application needs by configuration. The design and implementation details are discussed as well as a concrete application based on this framework.
