It's all in the (ambient) environment: Designing experiences in ubiquitous hybrid worlds

The objective of this invited talk is to present selected visions of ubiquitous computing and ambient communication based on the notion of the disappearing computer and to reflect on the resulting challenges for designing experiences in future smart environments. Our approach places the human at the centre of our design considerations and is based on exploiting the affordances of real objects by augmenting their physical properties with the potential of computer-based support. Combining the best of both worlds requires an integration of real and virtual worlds resulting in hybrid worlds. In this approach, the computer "disappears" and is almost " invisible" but its functionality is ubiquitously available and provides new forms of interacting with information. The approach can be summarized by the statement that "the world around us is the interface to information and for conveying experiences".

From human-computer interaction to human-artefact interaction: Interaction design for smart environments

The introduction of computer technology caused a shift away from real objects as sources of information towards desktop computers as the interfaces to information now (re)presented in a digital for-mat. In this paper, I will argue for returning to the real world as the starting point for designing information and communication environments. Our approach is to design environments that exploit the affordances of real world objects and at the same time use the potential of computer-based support. Thus, we move from human-computer interaction to human-artefact interaction. Combining the best of both worlds requires an integration of real and virtual worlds resulting in hybrid worlds. The approach will be demonstrated by sample prototypes we have built as, e.g., the Roomware (R) components and smart artefacts that were developed in the project "Ambient Agoras: Dynamic Information Clouds in a Hybrid World" which was part of the EU-ftinded proactive initiative "The Disappearing Computer"(DC).

Designing interaction for smart environments: Ambient intelligence and the disappearing computer

In this keynote, the author presents selected visions of ambient intelligence and the disappearing computer and comment on the resulting challenges for designing interaction in future smart environments. Our approach is based on exploiting the affordances of real objects by augmenting their physical properties with the potential of computer-based support. Combining the best of both worlds requires an integration of real and virtual worlds resulting in hybrid worlds. In this approach, the computer "disappears" and is almost "invisible" but its functionality is ubiquitously available and provides new forms of interacting with information. The general comments are illustrated with examples taken from developing roomware components for cooperative buildings, project work in the EU-funded "Disappearing Computer" initiative, especially ambient displays and mobile devices in the "Ambient Agoras" project, and more recent developments for smart home environments.
