Progress for Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment by Means of Digital Lifecycle Twins - A Taxonomy

To understand and optimize the impact of a product along its lifecycle, the consideration of social, economic and environmental factors is of increasing interest for customers and regulating institutions. In this context, Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) is used to monitor and understand the trade-offs of the three sustainability dimensions. Today, LCSA still faces major challenges, such as availability, actuality and validity of data or consistent and appropriate measures to support Design for Sustainability. New technological innovations may support the enhancement of the methodology. In the background of a digitized product and service lifecycle, especially Industry 4.0 technologies, Digital Twins and the integration of Artificial Intelligence may solve data and feedback challenges through new ways of data collection, transfer, validation and intelligent analysis. This paper aims at exploring this potential of new technological innovations for an enhanced LCSA of capital goods and durable consumer goods as well as related services and proposes a taxonomy. Therefore, a literature review to identify existing digital solutions and research gaps is established. For the identified gaps, a new concept, the Digital Lifecycle Twin for LCSA is presented. The authors address both, the positive but also the negative implications put on the LCSA framework from a sustainability perspective. Ultimately, these findings will contribute to the enhancement of the LCSA methodology as well as to the design of a support system to enable environmentally and socially sound design of products and services.

Sustainable Corporate Development: A Resource-Oriented Approach

Sustainable corporate development can be understood as a strategy that respects not only economic goals but also environmental and social aspects, weigh against each other and thus, ensures the long-term business success. The number of enterprises that are oriented towards corporate sustainability has increased in recent years, but the implementation still encounters a variety of limits. The goal of this chapter is the development of an integrated approach to foster sustainable development on the corporate level. In this context, not only tangible resources (e.g. raw material, energy or machines) but in particular intangible resources (e.g. expertise and professional competence of the employees, corporate culture or relations with stakeholders) are considered key success factors for a sustainable corporate development. For its application, the integrated approach provides a set of instruments and procedures, which can be used for the purpose of analysis, planning, controlling and reporting of sustainable corporate development.

Firma Klappdekelen - ein Jahr später

Die Firma Klappdekelen dient als Anschauungsbeispiel für die Ergebnisse des Projekts ""JUMP 4.0 - Mobile Jobeinplanungsunterstützung für den Meister in der Produktion"". Denise, die Geschäftsführerin des fiktiven KMUs, braucht eine standfeste Zukunftsplanung, um weiterhin erfolgreich ihr Unternehmen führen zu können und vor allem ihren Mitarbeitern weiterhin einen Arbeitsplatz anbieten zu können. Dieses Kapitel betrachtet die Situation im Unternehmen ein Jahr später, nachdem die Handlungsempfehlungen und Lösungen des JUMP-4.0-Projekts umgesetzt wurden. Mithilfe des JUMP Planners werden individuelle Kundenwünsche nach dem Eingang selbstständig geprüft und eventuelle Anpassungen umgesetzt. Bei wiederholten Vorgängen findet die Maschineneinstellung automatisiert statt. Die Prozessabläufe sind insgesamt transparenter und Entscheidungen können schneller getroffen werden. Auswirkungen auf den Meister sind bspw. eine Verbesserung der Koordination der einzelnen Aufträge in den unterschiedlichen Produktionsphasen sowie eine Verbesserung der Übersichtlichkeit der Prozessabläufe. Jetzt hat er mehr Zeit für Optimierungen und Verbesserungen.

The Digital Twin for Operations, Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul

Looking at digital twins in terms of their information sets (master and shadow models), a significant part of the shadow models is created in the context of product life. Digital twins must be designed accordingly, focusing on their dedicated added value or business model. This concerns not only the information and data models, but also the communication technologies, processing routes and interaction mechanisms used. With appropriately designed digital twins, product life becomes a source of knowledge for optimizing or tracking product systems. MRO processes play a special role in this. Here, the digital twin becomes a monitoring system, information source, process manager or information sink through suitable functions and thus a potential knowledge repository.

Integrated strategy development based on intangibles

The development towards a knowledge-based economy has already progressed so far that intangible resources already have, in many cases, a greater influence on business success than classical material production factors. In the context of the digital economy, this challenge becomes even more important as competitive differentials on a globalized market will increasingly rely on intangible features rather than ""hard"" product functionality or price only. The method ""Integrated Strategy Development"" (ISD) aims at enabling small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to design strategies for the development of their business model, systematically integrating the necessary qualitative aspects of intangible assets to meet the needs of the knowledge-based and digital economy. The ISD model has been tested and used in various application contexts where it has proven to be of practical benefit in the strategy definition and the respective implementation planning and monitoring in European SMEs from various business sectors. Incremental adaptations of the method were used in further application contexts including the strategic planning and evaluation of applied research institutes in Brazil. The article concludes with further application and development potential of the ISD method for the digital economy.

Die Zukunftsvision von Denise ist ein Team, welches zu jeder Zeit zielgerichtet und strukturiert zusammenarbeiten kann, ein digital aufgestelltes Unternehmen, welches auf kundenindividuelle Aufträge schnell und ohne Produktionspausen reagieren kann, und ein neues Geschäftsmodell mit einer vielfältigen Produktpalette. Dieser Transformationsprozess kann mithilfe einer Software für den Meister beschleunigt werden, welche durch das Projekt JUMP 4.0 entwickelt wurde. Zudem können durch Techniken einer Qualifikationsmatrix neue Anforderungen an die Mitarbeiter evaluiert werden, das Prozessmanagement optimiert werden sowie die zukünftigen Entwicklungen der Arbeit in Industrie 4.0 durch die Szenariotechnik herausgebildet werden. Technologiemanagementwerkzeuge helfen dabei, mit neuen aufkommenden Technologien Schritt halten zu können.

Robot Inference of Human States: Performance and Transparency in Physical Collaboration

To flexibly collaborate towards a shared goal in human-robot interaction (HRI), a robot must appropriately respond to changes in their human partner. The robot can realize this flexibility by responding to certain inputs, or by inferring some aspect of their collaborator and using this to modify robot behavior-approaches which reflect design viewpoints of robots as tools and collaborators, respectively. Independent of this design viewpoint, the robot's response to a change in collaborator state must also be designed. In this regard, HRI approaches can be distinguished according to the scope of their design objectives: whether the design goal depends on the behavior of the individual agents or the coupled team. This chapter synthesizes work on physical HRI, largely in manufacturing tasks, according to the design viewpoint and scope of objective used. HRI is posed as the coupling of two dynamic systems; a framework which allows a unified presentation of the various design approaches and, within which, common concepts in HRI can be posed (intent, authority, information flow). Special attention is paid to predictability at various stages of the design and deployment process: whether the designer can predict team performance, whether the human can predict robot behavior, and to what degree the human behavior can be modelled or learned.

In diesem Kapitel wird zunächst ein Ausblick aus Perspektive der Anwender und technischen Partner gegeben, eine Prognose darüber, was sich für KMU und den Meister durch JUMP 4.0 ändern wird. Im Anschluss wird ein Ausblick aus Perspektive der Forschung erfolgen, in dem die aktuellen Themen und Schwerpunkte hinsichtlich Industrie 4.0 in KMU aufgezeigt werden.
