    An advanced robot control system for manufacturing processes

    Presented in this paper is an advanced robot control system which is used as a research and test environment. Its hierarchical and highly modularized structure, based on a new standard reference model proposed for telerobot control system architectures, allows customized development and implementation of different complex advanced control concepts and algorithms, including fusion of multisensor data. An overall system-oriented approach for sensor-driven manufacturing processes with industrial robots was developed and tested. A contact task was used to demonstrate the system performance.

    For many applications, robots are needed which have an absolute, cartesian pose accuracy in the same order of magnitude as their repeatability. Calibration procedures have to be applied to reach this aim. The required measurements must be very precise and therefore need complex and expensive measuring procedures and devices. In the paper, it is shown that for these measurements distance sensors can also be employed and how it can be done by enlarging the robot model.

    Analysis of automated press-lines by means of simulation

    The automotive industry employs flexible automated press-lines composed of individual mechanical presses and handling or feeding systems. The state-of-the-art is to stop the presses for the feeding operation in order to safely avoid collisions between feeder and die. Productivity however, would be improved substantially by performing feeding procedures within the regular cycle of the presses, i.e. running the press-line in continuous motion. Based upon parameterized models of the pressing forces as well as the presses including their servo drive systems the compliance of press-lines running in continuous motion with given kinematic and kinetic restrictions is verifiable by the introduced simulation.

    An off-line planning- and simulation system for the programming of coating robots

    After the development of a computer aided planning system for numerically controlled paint-spraying machines, a new mathematical procedure to describe the electrostatic coating process has been conceived. The central aspect of the mathematical model is the calculation of the electrical field distribution on an sculptured surface, whereby the complicated problem of 3-dimensional field calculation can be reduced to the computation of the field intensity in a 2-dimensional plane. In this way, a simulation of the electrostatic coating process with determination of the complete field pattern (of all surfaces) is possible. For the first time the mathematical description is not based on the description of the continuum theory of the Maxwell equations, but on the physical law of electrical charges (Lorentz).
