    Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) is acquiring increasing commercial and socio-economic significance. For products and goods with high investment costs and a long lifespan, especially in the sectors of energy and transportation, a considerable portion of commercial profits are generated by after-sales services. In the field of research and development, not enough attention has been paid so far to tasks and approaches involving MRO. The field thus has a limited scientific background, despite a high potential in the business sector for technological and scientific optimization. The challenges and chances of MRO for sustainable enterprises will be explained with reference to the Fraunhofer Innovation Cluster Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul in Energy and Transport. The developments and project results of the four fields of innovation »Cleaning«, »Repair and Overhaul«, »Condition Monitoring and Diagnosis«, as well as »MRO Planning and Digital Assistance« will be explained.

    Applicability of industrial robots for machining and repair processes

    Defect high value components with a long life-time such as turbine blades and vanes are usually not disposed but rather repaired. Due to the lot size of 1, most of the work is done manually. With the aim of (semi-) automating the repair processes an adaptive grinding process for re-contouring of turbine blades has been developed. Industrial robots are used to provide a flexible machine system for all necessary repair process steps.

    Study on process forces and wear behavior of PCD tools in stone milling
    ( 2011) ;
    Manthei, Marcel
    Standard milling tools from the metal machining industry are tested regarding their applicability for milling of natural stone materials. The study aims on qualifying customized standard milling tools for the free form machining of natural stone ob-jects for cultural and architectural purposes. The cutting process is investigated in terms of wear and process forces. The process forces are analyzed in order to model and predict the cutting forces similar to the specific cutting force model in metal cutting. As part of the studies milling tools with diamond based cutting ma-terial are investigated. To examine the applicability of standard milling tools and the influence of the tool geometry on the cutting process of natural stone, end mill cutters with two polycrystalline diamond (PCD) teeth using negative, neutral and positive rake angle are compared. For the investigation on the cutting material and the cutting forces a cylindrical end milling cutter with a single indexable insert and different diamond based cutting tool materials, especially polycrystalline diamond, is used. The results show that a specific cutting force is not measurable for the tested material and that the wear behavior of the tool is influenced by the grade of the cutting material and tool configuration.

    Mit der Etablierung neuer Werkstoffe wie Verbundwerkstoffen oder Titan-Aluminiumlegierungen wird dem Wasserstrahlschneiden immer größere Bedeutung zukommen. Die Eigenschaften von Spezialwerkstoffen machen die Bearbeitung mit traditionellen Fertigungsverfahren ebenso wie durch Laser- oder Plasmaschneiden oft schwierig oder unmöglich. Für das Wasserstrahlschneiden stellt dies ein enormes Zukunftspotenzial dar. Die Wachstumsraten der gesamten internationalen Branche lagen in den Jahren vor der Finanzkrise bei 10...12 %. Auch die Zukunftsaussichten sind positiv: die Technologieanbieter im deutschsprachigen Raum rechnen durchschnittlich mit einem Branchenwachstum von 17 % innerhalb der nächsten 3 Jahre. Die vorliegende Studie analysiert die Strukturen des deutschsprachigen Marktes (Deutschland, Österreich und Schweiz) für Technologie und Dienstleistungen. Weiterhin werden neue Entwicklungen, Potenziale und Trends im Bereich Wasserstrahlschneiden betrachtet. Der untersuchte Markt für Technologie besteht dabei aus Anbietern von kompletten Schneidsystemen, Pumpentechnik, Schneidköpfen und Verbrauchsmaterial sowie Abrasivmitteln. Der Markt für Dienstleistungen wird in der Studie durch lohnfertigende Unternehmen repräsentiert. Neben der Industrie wurden auch auf dem Gebiet tätige Forschungseinrichtungen zu Entwicklungen und Trends im Bereich Wasserstrahlschneiden befragt.
