Two case studies. Reacting to the growing pressure from their customers, many car component suppliers have carried out considerable organizational changes in the last years. Improvements were mostly made by establishing customer-focused and self-organized units. The cases presented in this article show a company structure (VDO), where customer-related units fulfil demanding entrepreneurial tasks, and a shop floor reengineering (Ymos), where self-organized groups with total time autonomy have led to remarkable quality improvement and productivity increase.

The engineer drafts structures and operating means for the factory as a sociotechnical system. Here, he is influenced by his notion of human properties. In this article, the significance of comprehensive working tasks is derived from fundamental properties of man as a target-oriented and social being, followed by an explanation of the successes in productivity of teamwork. The model of work for which responsibility is assumed may accelerate, among other factors, the development of a "European way" to more productive factories.

The importance of tacit knowledge for short-term order control is increasingly recognized. However, up to now little is known about the structure and use by the shop floor staff of this kind of knowledge. Starting from the key tasks of order control this article discusses the characteristics of skill-enhancing short-term order control systems.

In today's flexible manufacturing, order planning and control decisions have to be revised more often than in the past. MRP II systems cannot follow the big number of shop floor events. A knowledge based shop floor control system was developed to assist supervisors to find suitable solutions for shop floor problems. Simulated rescheduling can test various sets of parameters and an analysis module makes quantitive effects visible as throughput time and costs.

Knowledge-based shop floor control. In today's flexible manufacturing, order planning and control decisions have to be revised more often than in the past. MRP II systems cannot follow the big number of shop floor events. The numerous mutual dependencies cannot be assessed even by experienced supervisors. Therefore an advanced shop floor control system was developed that supports supervisors in making short term production decisions using company wide and individual information and rules.
