Applications of subdivision techniques in product development

The representation of surfaces in smooth, parametric form is of central importance in mechanical engineering. In order to machine a shape using a computer, it is necessary to produce a computer-compatible description of that shape. Subdivision techniques are a surface representation that generalizes B-splines to arbitrary topology. Due to their strong geometric properties, they enjoy growing popularity in computer graphics. Their application in engineering has been much more hesitant because of several reasons. To overcome these hindrance reasons the so-called Faired Interpolating NURBS (FIN) algorithm is introduced in this thesis. The advantages of this algorithm are demonstrated on examples from reverse engineering, industrial design and manufacturing.

The chapter provides an overview of the computer-integrated technologies supporting product development processes in a wider sense and the current situation of knowledge management. It includes three main sections. Section 2 discusses the design techniques affected by computer-aided technologies and the corresponding tools. Section 3 gives a general introduction of concepts of computer integrated technologies. Therefore, also basic technologies and organizational approaches are described. Section 4 explains possible architectures for software tools that support product development processes. Section 5 finally gives a wide overview of the application and development of knowledge management.

In modern CAD systems it is necessary to simulate connections of components in several steps. Connecting elements, such as screws, rivets and the like, must be simulated as indivi- dual parts, while modifications have to be made on the geometry of the parts to be connected, such as the carrying out of bores. Only then such parts will be combined to form an assembly group. This article introduces a method that permits connections to be handled as an element within a feature-based modeling system.

Knowledge-based systems make possible an increased utility potential for software in the area of design and process planning, taking account of constantly increasing production complexity. This article offers an overview of application areas for knowledge-based systems in development and design. Activities are identified that can be supported consistent with the present state-of-the-art, in conclusion, a categorization of industrial applications and research activities in this area is undertaken.
