Composite materials are presently used only to a very small amount for ship constructions, although numerous examples of advantageous applications already exist. Various constructions and components can technically be realized by using composite materials. Among these are sport boats and yachts, hover craft and hydro craft, as well as navy vessels. For a more general use in ship building, economic aspects are of prime importance. Even here composites offer significant advantages which are still not sufficiently known. Advantages are achieved not only in the manufacture o ships and ship components but also with regard to life cycle costs, since maintenance costs can be significantly reduced. The use of composites opens possibilities for new cost efficient ship concepts. Some examples will be shown. For the realisation of cost efficient ship structures and components the choice o design concepts and the selection o materials become very important. Examples of suitable constructions an te st results as well as criteria for an adequate choice of material will be presented.
