In this contribution we concentrate on the detection and quantitative characterization of casting defects at the surface as well as in the near-surface and the bulk area. For ultrasonic inspection of the bulk material we employ mechanized scanning and defect reconstruction using the Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (SAFT). For the near-surface inspection we consider eddy current techniques to identify open or covered defects. Visual surface inspection based on optical systems and image processing complements our multi-sensor approach.
