Abstract
A method for diagnosis of combustion engines based on a high precision analysis of the angular velocity and angular acceleration of the crankshaft is presented, providing a sound base for a detailed judgement on the actual state of the engine. Due to its powerful features the method can be applied for many diagnostic tasks, e.g., for cylinderspecific detection of misfiring. Starting from this method a system called SERUM (System for the Evaluation of the Rotational Uniformity of Motors) has been developed covering a wide range of applications. It can be applied as an individual tool for development and optimization of motors or as a standard equipment fully integrated into test beds for quality control.
