The future of NDT techniques and services will be shaped by the requirements of information transfer for global markets and resources. For long-term success, flexible productions need high security and high quality. Therefore, the importance of these areas - quality and safety - will increase within the global market. One important NDT task will be the risk-oriented proof of technical safety for plants and machinery in accordance with international codes and standards (RISQ-NDT). Today, these trends are already apparent in several industreis, such as aviation, railroad, and nuclear power industries. In the future, supplier parts will only be utilized when the quality for each individual part has been certified. In the global marketplace, even complete products will require individual and widely accepted quality certification to face up to liability integrated nondestructive testing (PINT). Besides RISQ-NDT and PINT, nondestructive microscopic material analysis of Micro-NDT (µ-NDT) is a nother field of NDT that will gain more importance in the future. New materials and new manufacturing processes require new nondestructive testing methods and microscopic techniques to determine the quality and material characteristics of new materials. Therefore, modern physical testing methods with high microscopic resolution will have to be designed. The problem-oriented quest for new inspection methods and the development of economic inspection systems (integrated into production management and production information networks) requires a modular design concept for system and sensor design.
