Abstract
In the case of armor perforation by a rod shaped projectile there is a residual rod surrounded by a debris cloud. Beside the residual rod also the debris cloud can produce considerable damage on persons, instruments, structures etc. The knowledge of such behind armor data is important for vulnerability studies. A measurement technique is described to determine as much data about this process as possible. Data means mass, material, size, angle and velocity of the debris including the residual penetrator as well as information about the target rear side bulging, bursting and cloud development in dependence on time. Experiments in full and half scale have been performed. Two test setups were developed and applied. The first one uses a ruby laser stroboscope to observe the rear side bulging and bursting of the target and the break through of the residual projectile. The cloud expansion far from the target is observed by special flash X-ray arrangements. An example of the time dependence of the process is given. The main element of the second test setup is a soft catcher for the debris. The goal in developing this soft catcher was to catch as much as possible of the debris. The handling of the soft catcher and the experience gained during its evaluation is described.
