Titel
Crack propagation and strength properties of technical alumina
Abstract
From crack propagation experiments performed on the double torsion specimens the dependence of crack propagation velocity on the stress intensity factor was obtained. Loading experiments were performed on 4-point-bending specimens and tensile specimens both to analyse the stress-strain behaviour and to determine the distribution of the fracture stresses. Density and Young's modulus were determined separately for each sample. The experimental results show that systematic local variations of the relevant materials quantities and strength properties may occur in such materials. In order to explain the obtained results, anisotropic microstructure effects, distribution and propagation of microcracks are discussed. (IWM)
