Correlations between absorption at 245 nm and radiation induced loss in pure silica core optical fibers

The near uv transmission Ä200-350 nmÜ of several low OH containing fibers was measured before and 10 days after the fibers were irradiated to 10 krad. Under these conditions little change was observed in the spectra. The absorption at lambda=245 nm was observed to correlate with the induced loss at lambda=850 nm for gamma-irradiation and with the longer term Ä0.1 sÜ residual induced loss upon pulsed electron irradiation. No apparent correlation was observed with the short term Ä10 * *-5 sÜ residual induced loss upon pulsed electron irradiation. Implications for the mechanisms of defect growth and recovery will be presented.
