Abstract
The main purpose of this paper is to describe an empirical correlation between interlaminar fracture properties of coupon specimens and the damage tolerance behavior of higher order specimens (laminate specimens, detail specimens and subcomponents) for advanced polymer matrix composites. Four prepreg materials exhibiting a broad range of interlaminar fracture toughness were selected and characterized at different specimen levels as to their delamination growth behavior under various monotonic and fatigue loading conditions (mode I, mode II and mixed mode I/II). When comparing the mixed mode failure criteria established at the coupon level, an excellent correlation could be achieved with the experimental results obtained for higher level specimens in terms of material ranking.
