Abstract
The degrdn. mechanism of the azide polyester PAP-G (poly-2,2-bis(azidomethyl)-1,3-propanediol-glutarate) on controlled pyrolysis differed from that of the polyether GAP (glycidyl azide polymer). The decompn. is more intensive, involved more of the C backbone and occurred at lower temps. As an energetic component in a propellant, it tends to disintegrate at an early stage, giving off carbonaceous material of the polymer structural backbone. Mixed metal oxides in the doped binder samples affected neither the reaction enthalpy nor the reaction products. However, they accelerated nitrene formation by shifting the reaction interval to lower temps. (i.e., as much as 20 K). In the case of PAP-G, the effect was most obvious by the additive MOVO whereas for GAP, Cu chromite is most effective.
