The publishing process is currently undergoing significant changes. We can observe a metamorphosis from a craft towards a more industrial production process. Today's workflow can be characterized by many flow barriers that hinder information to be used. So the creative processes of authors, the design processes of designers, and the manufacturing processes of printing and finishing are only scarcely connected. The development of the "Print Production Format (PPF)" by the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics (IGD) with the support of the industry consortium CIP3 (International Cooperation for Integration of Prepress, Press, and Postpress) of 28 world leading companies is intended to connect these processes. This development allows to make information available along the whole of production flow. This is the first to allow a computer integrated manufacturing for print products. CIP3 PPF encodes this information in the PostScript language, and thus provides the different stages alon g the production with a kind of information container in electronic form. Specifications have been developed, and implementations have started to appear in prototypes and early products. First experiences with the implementation of the concepts conclude this report.
