Abstract
Pure carbon steels containing different amounts of carbon were laser-irradiated. This hardening process, caused by martensitic transformation due to high self-quenching rates, created microdefects that were revealed by positron lifetime spectroscopy and micromagnetic techniques. The dependence of the microstructure upon the laser-deposited energy is presented. Changes in the defect structure are discussed as a function of the material. The stability of the produced microdefects is analyzed by isochronal annelaing. The opportunity to obtain more detailed information about the material behavior by comparing the results of the positron lifetime spectroscopy and the micromagnetic spectroscopy is discussed.
