The fracture behaviour of safety-relevant automotive components. Part 2. The influence of component design
Abstract
When designing high-performance, light-weight components for car transmission and suspension systems, it is important to know the component life-time under normal, random load as well as the safety against failure. The fracture behaviour under impact loads plays a major role in this context. An experimental study into the influence of material properties on the fracture behaviour of automobile stub axles and specimens of comparable geometry is described in this article. For the highly stressed components of the vehicle suspensions beside the fatigue life under normal operational loads also the safety against total failure is a decisive criteria. The fracture behaviour under impact loads plays a major role in this context. An experimental study into the influence of the geometric design of automobile wheels and wheel hubs is described in this article.
