Abstract
WO 200140435 A UPAB: 20010711 NOVELTY - Measuring changes in the gas composition during reactions taking place in a gas-filled reactor by measuring, during an examination interval (EI), subdivided into many time intervals (TI), the changes in concentration of at least one gas component that represents a measure of the progress of reaction. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Measuring changes in the gas composition during reactions taking place in a gas-filled reactor by measuring, during an examination interval (EI), subdivided into many time intervals (TI), the changes in concentration of at least one gas component that represents a measure of the progress of reaction. At the start of each TI, the gas composition is the same as at the start of EI, and each TI is long enough to provide a measurable change in concentration. USE - The method is especially useful for monitoring changes in gas composition caused by microbial and/or biochemical oxidation or chemical reactions or in (an)aerobic decomposition or conversion reactions, e.g. to assess activity and/or speed and extent of reactions, also to test biodegradibility of test substances. Exemplified are measuring carbon dioxide mineralization during aerobic digestion of plastics in an aquatic test and measuring oxygen consumption during autoxidation of fats (leading to rancidity) in cocoa beans that have been subjected to different pretreatments. ADVANTAGE - Very small changes in gas composition can be detected and measurements can be made over long periods (months), with high precision and reproducibility.
