Abstract
EP 968964 A UPAB: 20000203 NOVELTY - Treatment of ammonium-containing waste water comprises concentrating the waste water to obtain a concentrate enriched in ammonium and other soluble substances while recovering ammonium-free purified water, precipitating magnesium ammonium phosphate from the concentrate, and separating the precipitate from the ammonium-free concentrate. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Treatment of ammonium-containing waste water containing other soluble substances and optionally solids comprises: (a) optionally separating solids; (b) concentrating the waste water to obtain a concentrate enriched in ammonium and other soluble substances while recovering ammonium-free purified water; (c) precipitating magnesium ammonium phosphate from the concentrate; and (d) separating the precipitate from the ammonium-free concentrate. USE - The process is especially useful for treatment of farmyard slurry to produce magnesium ammonium phosphate, which can be used as a fertilizer or can be decomposed to produce ammonia. ADVANTAGE - Concentrating the waste water reduces the liquid volume to be processed (compare DE3732896 and DE4040067).
