Abstract
An important element of the processing chain of laser material processing is the laser beam. To ensure the process capability of this tool its spatial and temporal behavior as well as its effects on the process have to be identified and operationally described for quantification and measurability. Beam diagnosis supplies actual and recent information about the beam characteristics. The measurement cycle is automated to yield results of a high level of confidence and to support the operator. Simulation is utilized by three ways. (i) For prediction of the behavior of the beam source and the delivery system due to misalignment or wear intensity distribution and beam profiles are calculated. Variations can be chosen free from operating conditions to yield a conception of the effects of generation and transmission on the beam quality. (ii) Process simulation is utilized as a planning aid. (iii) In conjunction with the simulation of the beam a generic tool for quality assurance and model-bas ed process guiding is generated. For technical realization an autonomous production cell is well suited. Integration of planning and control in conjunction with a comprehensive feedback structure leads to a powerful tool for manufacturing in laser materials processing.
