When handling sawn timber and veneer in partly manufacturing processes, at present it is possible to achieve by a manual visual control that the work pieces produced in computer-controlled topping plants show the required quality. The automatic detection of defects as shakes, open spaces, inclusion of bark, branches, too strong discoloration and intergrowths has already been proposed. On a visual scanning with CCD line scan cameras the a.m. defects can only be detected and distinguished with rapid and adapted image pre-processing device. Regarding the use in the industrial production of such fully automatic systems for the recognition of defects there scarcelly exist experiences. For the time being the development and the testing of adequate processes is a priority of the research work.
