Powerful new tools for broadcast and audio production
Abstract
The combination of two new technologies is about to transform an important aspect of the broadcast industry. The first, ISDN, or Integrated Services Digital Network, is poised to alter the delivery of telephone services worldwide by converting connection from the lumbering analog voice format invented at the turn of the century to a digital infoproduct approprate to the 21st century. The second, ISO/MPEG Layer III audio compression represents the latest in the development of methods for the coding of digital audio using high bit-rate reduction factors. Together, these technologies make it possible to convey broadcast-quality audio with the convenience, ubiquity, and low cost of the dial-up telco network.
