Aspekte der Funktion und des Stoffwechsels von Glutathion in Pflanzen
Abstract
In vascular plants the gamma-glutamyl tripeptide glutathione apparently plays a central role in the detoxification of pesticides and in the synthesis of phytochelatins, a group of peptides capable of heavy metal ion detoxification. At present, progress in these areas of research is limited mainly because of the lack of knowledge on the biochemistry of the paths of glutathione metabolism and the regulation of the processes involved. This lack of knowledge is at least partially due to the fact that analysis of the biochemistry and physiology of sulfur coumpounds in plants has for many years been considered rather to be an esoteric subject than a relevant area of plant research. Combined efforts of plant physiologists and plant molecular biologists are urgently needed to overcome this point of view that hinders progress in an important area of environmental research. (IFU)
