Abstract
The need for cost-effective, highly functional and quality-reliable products with ever decreasing time-to-market is putting product design under constant pressure for more complex decision making within reduced time frames. Additionally companies realize that the increasing need to develop environmentally compatible products in an effort to preserve our natural resources, comply to environmental legislation and recycle or dispose of at minimal cost involves a great opportunity to strengthen their future competitiveness. These new requirements and constraints for product design lead to even more sophisticated information processing and simulation tasks in product development. As a result an increasing need exists for support by information technology, especially where aspects such as Life-Cycle Costing (LCC) of the product are concerned. This support is of utmost importance in early product life phases, and also very early in product development as such, since in product development abo ut 70 per cent of the product properties and cost are defined and changes to the product arc still fairly inexpensive to be made. The paper gives an overview of existing tools in the LCC domain, focusing on end-of life aspects. Furthermore it describes the development of a LCC-tool within the Brite-Euram project TOPROCO (Total Product Life- Cycle Cost Estimation), which is meant to overcome the drawbacks of the earlier approaches.
