Antimutagenic effects of tumor promoters - co-mutagenic effects of co-carcinogens
Abstract
The approach of this work was to investigate the influence of tumor promoters and co-carcinogens upon mutagenicity and recombinogenicity of genotoxic substances, using yeast strain MP1. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a suitable organism in which to study mechanisms which result in the expression of a heterozygous recessive gene. Previous short-term experiments have shown that in stationary phase cells chromosome loss can be induced neither by tumor promoters and co-carcinogens alone, nor in combination with a carcinogen. In such experiments, tumor promoters were neither mutagenic nor recombinogenic when given alone; only a few co-carcinogens were weakly mutagenic.
