Abstract
Apparatus (100) to register diffused emitted light has a substrate (102) with a recess (110) in its upper surface (112) to hold a capillary (104) which holds the substance which reacts to light. The walls (106) of the recess reflect light emitted from the capillary. A photo detector (108) is placed over the substrate and covers the recess to catch light reflected from the recess walls. The recess (110) is shaped so that the capillary is wholly contained within it. The photo detector (108) is bonded to the substrate (102) so that, in one setting, the capillary (104) can be inserted into and removed from the recess (110) and, in another setting, receives the light. The capillary has a section coated with a reflective layer and an uncoated section. Both sections give either a one-piece capillary or two separate sections joined together. The first section is inserted into the recess of the substrate, and the end of the capillary away from it is coupled to a light source. The light can be d elivered to a section of the recess and at right angles to it, to energise the reactive substance. USE - The apparatus is used for detection of chemical luminescence and fluorescence where a capillary holds a substance which reacts to light and is triggered by a laser. It is used in analysis applications in biochemistry, environment protection, in medical diagnosis and industrial process control. It can also be used in enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). ADVANTAGE - The apparatus is easily handled and inexpensive, to register diffused emitted light in a total zone angle of 4 pi .
