A high-frequency ultrasound system for the range 10 MHz to 100 MHz is expanded to allow ultrasound volume measurements by using an 8 bit transient digitizer with 400 MHz sampling rate. The full A-signal response is digitized at each point of a meander xy-scan. Data are acquired in 200 x 200 points laterally and in 200 digitization points in the time axis. Measurement times are less than two times as required for a conventional C-scan. A graphic workstation is used for visualization of ultrasound data. Slicing techniques and ray-casting techniques are available in real-time operations. The method has been applied to visualize small inhomogeneities in Zirconia and SiSiC ceramic plates.
