Virtual Reality - Breaking Through in Industry

Virtual Reality - Durchbruch in der Industrie
Abstract
Some shortcommings of Virtual Reality systems will be overcome in the near future. Examples are the high expenditures of up to a quarter of a million dollars, considering an innovation cycle of less than two years in this sector. As huge projects in the future have to rely more and more on well presented presentations in order to receive financial investments, cheaper solutions have to be found. One way out of this problem is the upcoming data highway. Fibre optic cables will allow a drastically increased flow of data compared to conventional data flow through copper wires. Therefore the so called new "information superhighway" is ideal for transfering three dimensional images created on a central Virtual Reality server - like the one established at the IPA - to small and medium sized enterprises all over the world. They in turn won't have to buy expensive VR hardware but merely inexpensive hardware that is capable to handling the incoming data stream.
