In the preparation of dispersions of water-soluble vinyl polymers (I) by free radical homo- and/or copolymerisation of water-soluble monomers in an aqueous salt solution containing stabiliser, the stabiliser is a graft copolymer with a main chain of polyethylene oxide and grafted side chains of cationic vinyl monomer. Also claimed is the stabiliser per se. USE - (I), especially cationic (I), are useful as ancillaries in technical processes, e.g. in separation processes for water treatment and purification and in the paper, coal, ore, petroleum and food industries, e.g. for flocculation, coagulation, retention or dewatering. ADVANTAGE - The process is very simple and gives (I) stable dispersions with low viscosity. Even after prolonged storage, sediment is easily redispersed simple by shaking. The amount of stabiliser needed is less than usual and the conversion and hence productivity are very high.
