Abstract
The description refers to a process for the handling of microscopically small dielectric particles where the particles are subjected to an electric field. In known processes, particles are subjected to electric fields inhomogeneously and polarized by them. The polarized particles gravitate in the direction of greater field strength. These processes permit no reversal of the direction of movement of the particles. The particles are enriched at the electrode with the result that they cannot be contained in free space. In the process according to the invention, said particles are subjected to one or several high-frequency fields travelling in specific directions, whereby a force is exerted on the particles compelling them to perform a movement that is strongly ansynchronous in relation to the field. With the aid of a device for performing the process according to the invention, particles can be handled with great flexibility. Through electrodes placed in linear and circular arrangements, particles on linear paths can be moved in any direction and through branched microstructures, they can be separated according to their dielectric properties and can be contained contactlessly. Applications are in the field of biotechnology and in the field of molecular separation, focusing and microtransportation.
