Process for the radiation of coated workpieces with laser beams, in which the surface temperature of the radiated workpiece area (20), in particular a processing area, is measured. In order to be able to measure the workpiece temperature (<-2 ) in the processing area (20) under a coating (12) of the workpiece surface, the process is implemented in such a way that the laser radiation is power-modulated at a low level of modulation in relation to its radiation power (P<-L), and that, in order to measure the temperature (<-2 ) of the workpiece circumference (13) covered by at least one coating (12), a temperature value (<-b ) is deducted from the measured surface temperature (<-0 ) of the coating (12), said temperature value being being calculated from the product of the laser radiation power (P<-L) absorbed by the workpiece (10) and the heat resistance (R<-th02) of the heat flow through the layer (12) into the workpiece (10) by the thermal substitution image o f each workpiece (10).
