Different shadowgraphy arrangements for the observation of projectiles in free flight are desribed. The simplest method ist the "direct shadowgraphy". Only a short duration point light source and a film without any optical elements are needed and a magnified picture is taken. Making also visible the flow field around the projectile the improved method of "focused shadowgraphy" has to be applied. In this case the light from the source becomes parallel by a lense or a mirror in the working section and the total optical system is focused at the reference plane. Both methods can be modified by a special arrangement of the optical elements for the observation of the event in two orthogonal planes, the so-called "two plane shadowgraphy". A new "two plane focused shadowgraphy", developed at EMI, is discussed, using mirros and two cameras.
