Abstract
Small-scale pool fires of MeOH, nitromethane, i-PrOH, and isooctane were studied using a video system and an image-analyzing software to test whether simplifications (const. flame shape, temp., and surface emissive power) in general made for the estn. of safety distances between storage tanks in the case of hazardous fires are justifiable. The fires showed quasi-periodic ascending flame structures with const. surface emissive power in time intervals of 100-200 ms. These structures ascend higher with increasing frequency as the fuel temp. increases. A strong decrease of the flame height with increasing O content of the fuel was also found. The short-time history of the total emitted heat depends mainly on the flame shape. To est. the max. radiation on a target it is proposed to use a flame geometry of a ball ascending with increasing radius.
