One of the crucial issues in tunable diode laser spectroscopy is laser selection and will be automatic laser function check. We investigate to this aim the measurement and analysis of the threshold characteristics from laser current vs. voltage data. Thus, data can be obtained, that do not depend on allignment, system optics or detector performance. We shall present data on the threshold behaviour obtained by derivative techniques and on their interpretation from laser resonator characteristics. In this frame, we present a theoretical explanation of the dependence of the current on the voltage and power vs. current curves of diode lasers.
